Renewable fuel company Anaergia Inc. has tapped Assaf Onn as its new acting chief executive officer, bringing on the former Marny Investissement COO following an investment by the Luxembourg-based firm in April.

He replaces Brett Hodson, who was CEO since June 2023, who had succeeded the company’s founder and chairman Andrew Benedek.

Onn has been Anaergia's acting CEO since June 24.

“As we enter the next chapter of Anaergia’s journey with the significant investment and show of confidence in the company’s business by Marny, it is only natural that Marny would desire to lead the company and accordingly this is the right time to transition leadership,” Benedek said in a release.

“Assaf knows our business well, and the board is confident that he is the right leader to oversee the business during this transition period.”

Burlington, Ont.-based Anaergia has projects in 17 countries, with 134 megawatts of power generation capacity, according to its website. The company helped abate approximately 460,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2021, it adds.

About Onn and Hodson

Onn has a background in hotel management and has been the COO of Marny since 2008. He also serves as COO of Hungarian real estate company Alfa Group International, a business partner of Marny.

He was appointed to Anaergia’s board following the closing of a $13.6-million second tranche of funding by Marny Holdco Inc., a Marny subsidiary. The funding is expected to total $40.8 million.

“I see great potential in Anaergia’s technologies and global footprint,” Onn said. “The rest of the board, and I, want to move forward and take the necessary steps to advancing Anaergia towards realizing that potential.”

Hodson is the former CEO and president of Corix Infrastructure Inc., a B.C.-based low-carbon infrastructure developer active in British Columbia and the U.S.

The release does not state his next career step.

“I would like to thank the board for the opportunity to serve the company as its CEO and wish Anaergia future success in deploying its great technology,” Hodson said.
