Kathairos to deploy methane removal systems in Alta.

Starting in March, Calgary-based Kathairos Solutions will bring 1,000 of its methane elimination systems online at remote well sites across Alberta – which it states will remove an estimated 141,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually.

DEEP Earth builds Canada’s first geothermal plant

DEEP Earth Energy is borrowing techniques and knowledge from the oil and gas sector to build Canada’s first commercial geothermal plant in southeast Saskatchewan – and replace coal-based electricity with a clean energy source.

New climate accounting rules aim at greenwashing

New global accounting rules for measuring and reporting climate-related impact will give investors the tools to make better decisions and make it tougher for companies to exaggerate environmental righteousness, the head of the body in charge of developing them said.

What biodiversity means for Canadian pension funds

The 2023 edition of the World Economic Forum Global Risks Report names climate change and biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse as one of the top threats to economies and societies. Managing these risks will be critical for investment firms.

Federal government releases ‘just transition’ plan

The Liberal government’s long-promised plan to transition Canada’s labour force to respond to climate change says a clean energy economy will not prompt massive unemployment in the country’s energy towns, but create more jobs than could be filled.

Alberta suggest cooperation on CCUS with feds

Alberta offered to collaborate with the federal government to incentivize carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) investments, as long as Ottawa refrains from introducing climate policies that impact the oil and gas sector without Alberta’s consent.

Alta. may lose investments if it lags on climate: report

Alberta needs a robust, credible plan on climate and energy if it is to remain competitive and attract investment in a world where more companies are setting net-zero targets, according to a new report from the Pembina Institute.

Alta, Sask methane emissions higher than reported

New research using advanced technology suggests heavy oil facilities in Alberta and Saskatchewan are releasing almost four times the amount of a powerful greenhouse gas than they report to government.

Report urges Montreal ban gas stoves, fuel heating

Montreal should ban the installation of new indoor fixed appliances, including gas stoves, that use fossil fuels as soon as possible, according to a report by the city's water, environment and sustainable development commission.

The big players of net-zero climate consulting

The corporate drive towards net-zero has triggered a climate advisory bonanza at management consultancy firms. They are investing massively to expand into this rapidly growing business area, both by retraining or hiring new staff, and by buying up smaller rivals.

IRA to spur thousands of new jobs in every state

Each U.S. state could gain between 2,000 and 140,000 clean energy jobs by 2030 thanks to investments spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), according to a new analysis by the think tank RMI.

The IRA created a whole new climate finance industry

A new breed of climate tech startup is emerging to take advantage of provisions in the U.S.’s Inflation Reduction Act that for the first time allow clean-energy tax credits to be bought and sold, unlocking billions of dollars.

Wall Street wrestles green bankers over oil agenda

The Net-Zero Banking Alliance, which is a sub-unit of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, faces a potentially embarrassing mutiny from some of the world’s most climate-conscious lenders after it decided against imposing binding restrictions on fossil-fuel financing.

Rapid coal phase-out needed for Paris goal: study

A new study in Nature Climate Change finds that, in 1.5 C pathways assessed by the IPCC, coal power would have to be phased out in India, China and South Africa more than twice as fast as any power transition.

How Europe rapidly ditched its reliance on fossil fuels

Europe’s most remarkable response to Russia’s war on Ukraine hasn’t been marshaling military equipment. It’s been the unprecedented speed of an energy transition that in one year has nearly eliminated its dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

The race across Europe to build green steel plants

A town in Sweden's frozen north is on course to produce Europe's first commercial green steel. The company behind the project, H2 Green Steel, is using hydrogen technology to cut steel production-related emissions by as much as 95 per cent.

Australia built 5,000 MW of wind and solar in 2022

In 2022, the Australian renewable energy industry broke through a major milestone, commencing construction on over 5,000 megawatts of wind and solar farms. This is on top of another strong year for small-scale rooftop solar of slightly under 3,000 megawatts.

SAF could be aviation's alternative to carbon credits

Private aviation company Victor switched from a carbon offset program to using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offsets to reduce its emissions. Its model may be an example of how the business aviation industry can increase the effectiveness of decarbonization.

Contradictory coal data clouds China’s 2022 emissions

New preliminary energy data from the Chinese government suggests there was a 1.3 per cent rebound in the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions during 2022. However, separate figures point to a 1 per cent decline.

Scientists examine global warming ‘accelerators’

Recent climate projections may be underestimating the pace of global warming, because the interaction of powerful climate feedback loops that can accelerate warming are not well-represented in key climate models, an international team of scientists concluded in a study.
