The next EV challenge is charging the homes that power them

For a growing number of Canadians, the decision to switch to an electric vehicle (EV) is becoming more feasible. Canada continues to encourage EV adoption through measures such as the federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, which currently provides incentives of up to $5,000 for eligible light-duty EVs.

In addition to the financial incentives, there are more models available and improving driving range. Many drivers are finding that the benefits of going electric are no longer up for debate. What often receives less attention, however, is what happens after the vehicle arrives in the driveway.

As more Canadians make the transition, the readiness of residential electrical infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important part of the electrification conversation. The next challenge for many households is ensuring they can charge conveniently at home.

Because home charging is central to the EV ownership experience, homeowners are increasingly looking for solutions that fit seamlessly into their existing homes without additional electrical upgrades and cost.

This distinction matters because home charging remains the cornerstone of the EV ownership experience. According to the International Energy Agency's Global EV Outlook 2026, home charging continues to be the preferred solution for most EV drivers because it offers both convenience and lower operating costs compared to many public charging options. 

Recognizing this challenge, Schneider Electric recently launched Schneider Charge in Canada, a residential Level 2 EV charger with built-in SmartAmp dynamic load management technology. This unique system is designed to automatically adjust the charging output based on a home's available electrical capacity.

This solution reflects a broader industry effort to make home charging more accessible and better aligned with the realities of existing residential electrical panel/breaker infrastructure.

Can homes meet electricity demand of EV charging?

Despite growing attention on public charging networks and utility-scale investments, relatively little discussion has focused on whether existing homes are prepared to accommodate additional electrical demand.

The assumption often seems to be that widespread EV adoption will primarily require more charging stations and greater grid capacity. While both will undoubtedly play important roles in Canada's energy transition, many homeowners face a much more immediate challenge located within their own electrical system.

Across the country, homeowners are embracing a wider range of electric technologies, from heat pumps and induction cooking to battery storage systems and EVs. Together, these technologies are helping households reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and take a more active role in Canada's energy transition.

As homes become increasingly electrified, there is a growing opportunity to manage electricity consumption more intelligently so that new technologies can work together effectively within existing residential infrastructure.

For homeowners considering an EV purchase, uncertainty about home charging readiness can become a barrier. Depending on the age of the home and local code requirements, adding charging infrastructure may involve additional planning, permitting approvals or coordination with contractors and utilities.

All of this equals complexity and cost for the homeowner. For many consumers who are eager to make the switch to electric transportation, navigating those considerations can feel unnecessarily complicated and may delay adoption.

Managing capacity in the home

What makes this challenge particularly noteworthy is that the issue is not always a shortage of electrical capacity. In many cases, it is a question of how existing capacity is managed in the home.

Most homes experience fluctuating electricity demand throughout the day. Heating and cooling systems cycle on and off, appliances operate intermittently, and energy consumption patterns shift depending on household activity. An EV charging overnight is rarely competing with every major appliance operating simultaneously. Recognizing this reality creates an opportunity to rethink how charging is integrated into the home rather than assuming infrastructure must always be replaced or expanded.

This is one reason dynamic load management is gaining attention among industry professionals, utilities and electrical contractors. Instead of treating EV charging as a fixed electrical demand, these systems continuously monitor household energy consumption and automatically adjust charging output based on available capacity.

When electricity demand elsewhere in the home increases, charging output can be reduced temporarily. When demand falls, the charging output can increase again, allowing homeowners to make more effective use of the infrastructure already in place.

Home upgrades not always necessary

From a technical perspective, the concept is straightforward. What is more surprising is how often discussions about electrification continue to overlook this type of solution. Conversations about the energy transition frequently assume that every new electrical load requires additional infrastructure investment. While upgrades will undoubtedly be necessary in some homes, treating them as the default pathway risks creating unnecessary financial barriers at a time when affordability remains a significant concern for many Canadians.

The implications extend beyond individual homeowners. Policymakers and industry stakeholders should recognize that successful transportation electrification depends not only on vehicle sales but also on practical access to charging. Ensuring that Canadians can charge where they live may ultimately prove just as important as expanding public charging networks along highways and in urban centres.

Recent federal initiatives highlight the scale of the opportunity. Canada now has more than one million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on its roads, while investments in charging infrastructure continue to expand nationwide. Market adoption remains particularly strong in provinces such as Quebec and British Columbia, where supportive policies and consumer demand have helped accelerate EV uptake.

Using existing infrastructure for EV charging

Those figures are encouraging, but they also highlight a practical reality that can sometimes get lost in broader policy discussions: every EV eventually needs a reliable place to charge.

For the vast majority of drivers, that place will continue to be home. As a result, the next phase of electrification requires a broader understanding of what success looks like. Measuring progress solely by vehicle sales or charging station deployments risks overlooking the critical role that residential infrastructure plays in supporting long-term adoption.

Technologies that help homeowners maximize existing electrical capacity may not attract the same attention as a new vehicle launch or a major infrastructure announcement, but their impact could be equally significant. Solutions such as Schneider Charge, which incorporates built-in dynamic load management through SmartAmp technology, reflect a growing recognition that smarter energy management can help expand access to home charging while enabling residential infrastructure to be used more effectively.

Ultimately, the energy transition is not only about building more infrastructure. It is also about using existing infrastructure more intelligently and finding practical ways to remove barriers that can slow adoption. As Canada becomes increasingly electrified and households continue adding new technologies that rely on electricity, attention will inevitably shift from the vehicles in the driveway to the systems that power them.

For utilities, regulators, builders and homeowners alike, ensuring that existing homes can participate in this transition in a practical and affordable manner may become one of the defining challenges of the next decade. While public charging networks and grid investments will remain essential, making home charging accessible for a broader range of Canadians could play an equally important role in determining how successfully the country advances its electrification goals.
