Gone are the days where facility managers are “out of sight, out of mind.”
Microgrids: The key to power resiliency
There are a variety of both practical and technical considerations to take into consideration while advancing power resiliency through microgrids. But you know what’s even more expensive than advancement? Power disruptions. In fact, according to Eaton’s Blackout Tracker Annual Report, electric outages cost the economy $150 billion annually and impact approximately 14.2 million people.
3 ways building controls must evolve
With many exciting advances in data analytics, machine learning, grid integration, user interaction and renewable energy technologies entering the buildings industry, it is easy to get caught up in the vision and potential of high-performance buildings. The unfortunate reality is that many buildings designed to high-performance standards struggle to deliver on this vision.
Solar ‘wings’ to top off zero carbon project
Kevin Stelzer, principal at B+H Architects, is frank in describing the challenge of designing one of Canada’s first large-scale institutional buildings – the Mohawk’s Joyce Centre on the Fennell Campus in Hamilton, Ont. – to qualify to meet the Canada Green Building Council’s (CaGBC) new Zero Carbon Building Standard.
Consumer demand driving interest in wood technology
The drive for sustainability in tall buildings has led to increasing interest in the use of timber as a major structural element, even in very tall buildings. Heightened environmental concerns have dovetailed nicely with the development of mass timber construction, much of which uses cross-laminated timber, or CLT.

How CSR execs redefine the future of the workforce
A growing cadre of activist employees means CSR and sustainability professionals must start thinking of employee engagement as “fulfillment” rather than a tactical roadmap of actions. That means going well beyond laying out an inclusive engagement strategy to making employee health and well-being a core requisite and indicator of success.

Seven regions poised to feel climate change pain
It could have been the edge of the Sahara Desert or even Death Valley, but it was the remains of a large orchard in the hills above the city of Murcia in southern Spain last year. The soil had broken down into fine white, lifeless sand, and a landscape of rock and dying orange and lemon trees stretched into the distance.

Can building irrigation systems be wasting water?
More than two trillion gallons of water are still lost every year, and a significant portion of this loss comes from undetected leaks caused by irrigation systems.
