After a year of political tumult and economic headwinds, investors in the Canadian sustainability sector say the companies backed by solid fundamentals and a strong business case will prevail going into 2026.

CDPQ to acquire renewables company Innergex in $10B deal

Pension fund Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) announced in February an agreement to acquire Quebec-based renewable energy producer and developer Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. in a deal valuing Innergex at $10 billion, including debt.

Co-operators raise climate solution investments to $3B

Co-operators said in September it was raising its climate commitment by US$1 billion to show “how seriously this organization takes climate change as a strategic issue,” one of its sustainability leads told Sustainable Biz Canada.

RBC exits $500B sustainable finance goal

Following a strategic review and the resignation of CEO Sue Ozdemir, Calgary-based EV power electronics company Exro Technologies announced in November it consented to the appointment of a receiver under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Canada).

Battery recycler Li-Cycle enters bankruptcy

In May, battery resource recovery company Li-Cycle Holdings filed for bankruptcy protection under the Canadian Companies Creditors Arrangement Act as it continued to seek buyers or investors to keep its business operating. Li-Cycle was acquired by Glencore in August.

FLO, Hypercharge, SWTCH advance EV charger installations

In August, Quebec-based FLO announced a partnership to bring EV chargers to 100 Tim Hortons locations across Canada. SWTCH, Hypercharge, United Chargers and Australia-based Jolt also made major Canadian EV charger projects in 2025.

Low-carbon concrete moves closer to the mainstream

In June, CarbiCrete and Isobloc partnered to create insulated, energy-efficient building blocks. In November, Progressive Planet made the first pour of its PozGlass cement component and Bio Graphene Solutions demonstrated its low-carbon concrete mix at Toronto's Exhibition Place.

Deep Sky forges ahead with carbon removal in Canada

Montreal-based Deep Sky started operations at its Innisfail, Alta. Alpha facility in August. There, the company is testing technologies to filter out carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for long-term underground storage. Deep Sky named Alex Petre as CEO in June.

Hydrogen continues to gain ground across Canada

Triple Point Resources released plans for a hydrogen storage facility; HTEC advanced a hydrogen liquifier; Charbone and ABB partnered to rollout modular green hydrogen plants; and QIMC announced plans to ramp up natural hydrogen extraction.

Nova Scotia paper mill closes financing for $450M wind farm

In January, it was announced that a $450-million wind energy project being developed by the sister company of Nova Scotia-based Port Hawkesbury Paper will be powering its mill and providing clean electricity to the provincial grid.
